enjoy looking at the fitness industry at this time of year and trying to predict what the new trends will be.
It probably comes from still working extensively in the business, teaching classes and running my own studio, and wondering what new approach we can take to educate and enhance our clients.
So this is a quick look into my crystal ball, in the hope of catching a glimpse of next years trends.
Often you need to look back to see what’s in front, and after a year of high intensity fitness classes (HIIT).. I can see a definite swing towards more holistic disciplines.
Physical & mental stimulation
Classical Pilates, Tai-Chi and Yoga always simmer away in the background of gym timetables, but in my opinion, more and more of us will start to look towards these styles next year.
With mental health issues becoming more and more relevant, and people understanding that activity helps to keep us balanced, I imagine that next year will see an increase in attendance in these classes, and others like them.
Qualified instructors (always check) in Pilates and Yoga, can carefully guide you into the world of fitness, and will never throw you in the deep end and hope you can swim.
Technology
The advances in technology, and in particular apps and wearable tech, will also lead to some changes in the way people keep fit. Apple and Nike have taught us how to monitor and record our every step, this generation of fitness fans are well informed and in control of their own schedules.
Watch for an increase then, of people taking their fitness into their own hands.
Fitness apps will grow in popularity
Apps such as those found here at WatchFit , and online resources (again, such as this one) will encourage people to exercise at home in their own time with step by step instructions.
Classes with famous names
Of course we will still have our own well loved classes holding their own in the field, but expect a few more to join the party next year.
As Zumba gyrates it’s way into 2016, dance fitness seems to still be popular.
As Zumba gyrates it’s way into 2016, dance fitness seems to still be popular.
Look out for Strictly Come Dancing Judge Darcy Bussel’s own brand of class launching in the UK, and Fitsteps promises us a great year in the hands of Ian Waite and Natalie Lowe.
Also multiple Dancing on Ice champion Daniel Whiston has got in on the act with his Dance Fit DVD…all of which indicates dance’s link with fitness is stronger than ever.
Recruiting new PTs
The accessibility of training courses for people wanting to be personal trainers, has increased.
Watch for an influx of new PTs that will be storming the gyms in your area very soon.
As personal training moves forward, PTs will be advertising themselves in more sport specific ways, and with prices now more competitive, I can forseeclients looking for precise and insightful programs.
Small group PT sessions will see an increase, as groups of people sign up for blocks with their friends or colleagues, splitting the cost and keeping things social at the same time.
Exciting & challenging classes
Larger gyms and spas will be looking at the trends carefully before sinking investment into new classes.
On the radar in the UK will be Aqua Spin, literally stationary bikes in the swimming pool, Ariel Yoga, with clients performing moves while suspended in hammocks from the ceiling and treadmill and rowing classes with each participant on the relevant piece of equipment.
Quicker workouts
Finally I see clients looking to maximize their time and looking for quicker ways to workout.
Shorter more intense classes look set to continue, and body weight trainingin 20 minute blasts will retain participants.
Bear in mind that this is just my opinion on the early trends for next year. The industry is constantly in flux and who really can predict what will happen?
Some trends never go out of style
Let’s face it, despite what’s hot and what’s not, Centres will always run their favorite classes for their loyal members.
I still teach Zumba, nearly 5 years after doing my initial training, and it’s still one of the busiest classes on offer. If I go further back, would it surprise many of you if I announce that my step aerobics classes are still hugely popular?
On the other hand, if your ego and Facebook status is more important to you than your clients, it may be time to re evaluate your position in the industry.
